In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a global pandemic. The on-going crisis has had an unprecedented impact not only on public health but also on the global economy, social well-being and critical infrastructure.
Turin, Italy, July 2020. UNICRI is implementing a research project aimed at enhancing the role of families in drug use prevention and recovery among adolescents and children. This initiative, carried out with the support of the Department for Antidrug Policies of the Government of Italy, includes research activities in three selected countries: Italy, Lebanon and Tunisia.

Developed by Collège des Ingénieurs Italia, Politecnico di Torino and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Ideasquare in 2016, Innovation 4 Change has become one of the major Italian innovation projects based on the collaboration with companies, institutions and non-profit organizations.

Socio-economic conditions, as well as the practical and psychological challenges that families face during difficult times can represent risk factors and fertile ground for the development of drug-related problems among young people. It is therefore critical in such circumstances to pay the proper attention to families, in particular to their specific needs, in order to understand how they can be better supported in reducing the risk factors associated to drug use and to avoid the exacerbation of already complex situations.
Turin, 22 May 2020. UNICRI organized the second Expert Teleworkshop to discuss the malicious use of social media by non-state actors during a bio-emergency with a specific focus on the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 25 June, UNICRI held the virtual kick-off meeting for the CONTACT – Black Sea project, “Enhancing capacities to prevent the trafficking of radiological and nuclear material in the Black Sea region”.
On 26 June UNICRI held a virtual course on organized crime infiltration into the legal economy. from a global perspective. The lecturers of the training were Mr. Francesco Marelli, Mrs. Mariana Diaz Garcia and Mr. Marco Musumeci.
The world is shifting from analog to digital faster than ever before, further exposing us to the vast promise and peril of new technologies. While the digital era has brought society many incredible benefits, we also face many challenges such as growing digital divides, cyber threats, and human rights violations online.
The Covid-19 pandemic has underscored our reliance on digital technologies and is an urgent call to address how we can use and safeguard digital technologies to help all people.
