The nexus between transnational organized crime and terrorism represents a growing threat worldwide. The confluence of criminal and terrorist actors, tactics and resources enable them to gain stronger capacities to threaten peace, security and economic development. Terrorists are taking advantage of transnational organized crime in many contexts and by conducting many illicit activities spanning from the trafficking of arms, persons, drugs, artefacts and natural resources; to the kidnapping for ransom and other crimes including extortion and bank robbery.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) are organizing the 2nd Global Meeting on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Law Enforcement. The meeting will be held in Singapore on 3-4 July 2019 and will see the participation of representatives of the law enforcement, academia, private sector, and from UN and INTERPOL Member States.
UNICRI and the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ - International Centre for Counter-terrorism (ICCT) have signed a new agreement for the continuation of their activities in the field of preventing and countering violent extremism.
A Memorandum of understanding was signed by the Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and Ms. Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas Director, a.i of UNICRI. The side event, entitled “Hate Speech and Violent Extremism as Driving Factors Leading to Violence and Atrocity Crimes” will take place on 23 May at the Vienna International Centre (Conference Room M7) from 2.20 to 3.10 p.m.
