The United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
Celebration in Rome
On Thursday, April 6th at 10.30 to celebrate the UN International Day of Sports for Development and Peace an event has been organized by the Italian Association for International Organization (SIOI) in partnership with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Research Institute (UNICRI), and in cooperation with the CSIT World Sport Games, the Italian Paralympics Committee and the Italian Sport Committee against Drugs and Addiction.
The event, that will be held at SIOI's headquarters in Rome, is supported by the Italian Ministry of Sport, the Hon. Mr. Luca Lotti, the Department of Equal Opportunity of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministries and the Italian National Olympic Committee.
The United Nations attributes an extremely important role to sports. The United Nations General Assembly established, with Resolution 67/296, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace that is celebrated annually and in all over the world on the 6th of April, in remembrance of the first modern Olympics game in 1896 that took place in Athens. The goal of the celebration is to contribute and raise awareness of the role of sports in pursuing positive social change such as in the promotion of education, health, development and peace.
The United Nations in acknowledging that sports are important facilitators for sustainable development, have given it full recognition in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: “Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives."

Smith, Director of UNICRI; Mr. Giovanni Malagò, President of CONI; Hon. Mr. Luca Lotti, Minister of Sports; Mr. Bruno Molea, World President of CSIT World Sports Games; Mr. Luca Pancalli, President of the Italian Paralympics Committee; Mr. Daniele Masala, President of the Italian Sport Committee against Drugs and Dependence. Moderator of the event will be mr. Riccardo Cucchi.
