UNICRI’s Critical Minerals Initiative addresses the urgent challenges and vulnerabilities in the critical minerals supply chain. As the global demand for minerals like cobalt, lithium, and rare earth elements grows, so does the risk of illegal mining, environmental crimes, smuggling, corruption, and organized crime.
On 9-10 December 2024, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) delivered a specialized training course at the Institut für Mikrobiologie der Bundeswehr (IMB) in Munich, Germany. Organized in response to a request from the Institute, the training focused on enhancing the microbiologists’ capacities to effectively identify and counter disinformation campaigns targeting their work.
The third edition of 1540 Compass focuses on domestic controls and measures to safeguard sensitive materials, as outlined in operative paragraph 3 (a) and (b) of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1540 (2004). This issue highlights best practices for the secure production, use, storage, and transport of nuclear, chemical, and biological materials, as well as other sensitive items, emphasizing the importance of these measures throughout their entire life cycle.
